چکیده

Selenium (Se) was applied to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and subterranean clover (Trifolium subterranean) pasture as a fertilizer to determine the effect of Se form and concentration on Se accumulation in subsequent forage growth. Treatments were a no Se control, 0.6 kg/ ha Se as sodium selenate, and 0.6, 1.1, and 2.2 kg/ha Se as sodium selenite, all applied to pasture plots with low soil Se concentration in southwestern Oregon (n = 3 plots per treatment). The plots were protected from grazing by use of electric fence, and total forage DM production and Se concentrations were measured after the spring growing season in yr 1. Pastures were grazed by sheep over the fall growing season, but then were protected from spring grazing to enable sampling of residual forage Se concentrations during yr 2. Application of 0.6 kg/ ha selenate provided greater (P < 0.01) average forage Se content in yr 1 (8.44 ± 0.08 mg/kg) than all other treatments. Compared with the control (0.09 ± 0.06 mg/kg), the plots in the 0.6 and 2.2 kg/ ha selenite treatments contained greater 1Corresponding author: amy.peters@ oregonstate.edu (P < 0.01) forage Se content (1.17 ± 0.05 and 4.24 ± 0.35 mg/kg, respectively), whereas the 1.1 kg/ha selenite treatment tended (P = 0.06) to increase forage Se content (3.11 ± 0.79 mg/kg). Two years after Se application, only the plots treated with 0.6 kg/ha selenate and 2.2 kg/ha selenite had forage Se concentrations (0.43 ± 0.04 mg/kg and 0.51 ± 0.06 mg/kg, respectively) that differed (P = 0.04 and P = 0.01, respectively) from the control. Fertilization with Se had no effect (P = 0.37) on forage yield during yr 1. These data suggest that selenite and selenate fertilization increases forage Se concentrations for up to 2 yr. This may be a cost-effective method of supplying Se for grazing livestock.

Applied Biosolids (Municipal Sewage Sludge) on Forage Nutrient Concentrations over a Grazing Season in North Florida

Effects of applications of exceptional quality (low toxic minerals), high molybdenum (Mo)containing biosolids (sludge) to bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) pastures in successive years, or residual effects of applications the previous year, on minerals, crude protein (CP) and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) status of forages in north Florida were studied in relation to beef cattle nut...

Improving selenium status in plant nutrition and quality

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for human health due to its antioxidant capabilities. The Se content around the world is highly variable from 0.005 mg kg-1 in areas from China and Finland to 8,000 mg kg-1 in seleniferous soils from Tuva-Russia. However, about one billion of people in the world wide are Se deficient. During the last decade, studies related with strategies for Se biof...

The influence of selenium soil application on its content in spring wheat

The influence of application of increasing doses of selenium (0.05 mg, 0.10 mg and 0.20 mg/kg) into soil in pot experiments, with NPK fertilization of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L., variety Banti), on the biomass yield (grain, straw, roots) and on selenium accumulation was observed. Selenium in the form of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3·5H2O) and the NPK nutrients in the form of LAD-27, Ca(H2PO4...

Comparison of physiological and biochemical responses of wheat and barley to Selenium by spraying application under rain fed conditions. Nour Ali Sajedi* and Hamid Madani

This study investigated the effect of two forms of Se at three rates (0, 18, and 36 g/ha) on wheat and barley under rain fed conditions. Results showed that spraying application of 18 g/ha Se increased Chl a and Chl a+b contents while the selenium rate 36 g/ha decreased plant pigments. Evaluations of Chl a, Chl b, chlorophyll total a+b, carotenoids, chlorophyll total content, relative water con...

Effect of Feeding Selenium-Fertilized Alfalfa Hay on Performance of Weaned Beef Calves

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient in cattle, and Se-deficiency can affect morbidity and mortality. Calves may have greater Se requirements during periods of stress, such as during the transitional period between weaning and movement to a feedlot. Previously, we showed that feeding Se-fertilized forage increases whole-blood (WB) Se concentrations in mature beef cows. Our current object...
